TRINIDAD
Trinidad (& Tobago) is considered the birthplace of calypso, limbo and the steel band. It is a country of cultural and ecological contrasts. Originally an English
colonial possession, Trinidad has become a melting pot of primarily Indian and
Black cultures. Political power is balanced between those two cultures, the
Democratic government a blend of British and American ideas. It’s stunning rain
forest and wildlife stand in dramatic contrast to a burgeoning cosmopolitan,
industrial complex which commands much of the waterfront on the north and east
sides of the island. Trinidad is home to thousands of cruising sailors during
hurricane season because it is considered to be out of harms way.
This complex and lively country is one of America’s most strategic allies, located just seven
miles from the Venezuelan coast. It is perhaps the fourth largest producer of oil
and natural gas in the world, but the wealth of that reality has not trickled down to
its people.
Literacy remains one of Trinidad’s greatest challenges. Schooling is modeled after
the excellent and demanding system employed in Great Britain. However, it
unfortunately excludes many young people who did not learn how to read at an
early age. And while Trinidad fights to cope with this problem, books are in
critically short supply.
