BOATERS FOR BOOKS IS BORN

November 14, 1999: Boaters for Books is Born

Created by Punta Gorda sailors Bobbie (Roberta) Nemerson and Kathy Oberle, Boaters for Books was inspired by the people of the Caribbean and their need for Children's storybooks. In fact, books are so cherished that librarians rarely let them out of their sight.

After sailing 2,000 miles southeast from Florida to the Island of Grenada, the Nemersons and Oberles docked their boats for the hurricane season, flew home to Punta Gorda and immediately started working to make Boaters for Books a reality. Boaters for Books selected Grenada in the West Indies as the first island for distribution. Kathy explains, "It was important for us to start with an independent English speaking country where we could effectively work with the local teachers, clergy and government to format a distribution process that could be expanded to include the entire Caribbean."
