September 3, 2001, Punta Gorda, Florida. Boaters for Books reports an estimated two thousand children's storybooks have been boxed and are ready for shipment to Grenada as a result of its spring and summer collection efforts. Three thousand books are already in circulation in the schools and libraries of this Caribbean country, thanks to the efforts of hundreds and hundreds of SSCA members and friends, community organizations like the Green Hills Rotary Club of Nashville, Tennessee and the Punta Gorda, Florida Children's Library, and BFB shipper, Tropical Shipping, Inc.
Grenada has requested 8,000 to 10,000 children's storybooks for ages 4-14. That goal is within reach providing all cruisers spread the word and participate in the fall campaign. Boaters for Books urges all cruisers attending the upcoming Seven Seas Cruising Association Annual Meeting and Picnic to bring at least one storybook appropriate for Caribbean children. Boaters for Books will have a centrally located reception area at the Eau Gallie Convention center, where donated books will be packaged for shipment.
Last year more than 1,500 books were collected at the SSCA Meeting. Members collected books from libraries, schools, and private homes. Most were used books in excellent condition. Many were newly published, purchased at "close out" or donated by Books A Million and Barnes and Noble.
