Grenada Endorses Boaters for Books Project
Plans Libraries for each School

Grenada Chairperson Dodie Helgerson, assisted by Canadian educators John and Eleanor Palmer, met at length with an enthusiastic Acting Chief Education Officer, Mr. Batiste. After listening to the Boaters for Books plan of action, Mr. Batiste engaged the participation of Ms. Caroline Antwine, Inspector and Language Arts Director. A comprehensive plan was developed to allow the inbound books to quickly reach the hands of children without encountering a mountain of red tape.

Helgerson explains how the import procedure will work. "Books will be addressed to the Department of Education in care of myself. They (the Department) will clear the books in customs and deliver them to my home to be distributed in accordance with Ms. Antwine's directions." Caroline Antwine is in the process of identifying the first school with sufficient room to house a library. It is the intention of the Department of Education to have libraries established in every school. They will need 8 books per child to establish a library with an adequate representation. Boaters for Books will be a major contributor to the new libraries.
